Gym Class with Mr. Shuerkamp

Gym class with Mr. Shuerkamp is fun to most people, but to other people it’s not. Let’s see what Mr. Shuerkamp and some of his students can tell us about gym this quarter.

What are you excited about this quarter? After being asked what he was excited about, he responded "I am excited about the new kids, spring time, and my new helper Mrs. Cindy."

Mr. Shuerkamp's goals for the students are for them to follow expectations and achieve at their highest levels. His rules for the students to dress out, come to class, participate, try their best, be respectful, and have fun! This quarter they are doing basketball, floor hockey, badminton, fitness grams, and indoor soccer. How are the kids doing? We asked him. "How are the kids doing? Are they meeting expectations?" His response was "About 98% of them are doing good."

We also interviewed of some of his students. We asked one student what they liked about gym. Their response was "I like the teacher because he respects us. We get to pick our own partners. Mr. Sherkump doesn't push us hard. I like that we get free time and that there are fun sports like mat ball and basketball. We get to interact with our friends. Mr. Shuerkamp is a good teacher overall." We were then happy to hear from this student that there is absolutely nothing they dislike about gym and that they find it really fun. We also asked another student how they thought their class was doing. Their response was "The class is good. People are talkative, but most kids get quiet when they need to." Gym class isn’t easy, but once you get the hang of it, it can be a lot of fun. The gym teacher, Mr. Shuerkamp, unfortnately, has had his last year here at West Middle School. We are all sad to see him go, but he will always be remembered at West.

Boy's Basketball

We took time to interview a few boys’ basketball players. Here are some of the things they said, Aaron Romero said that he has made many shots throughout this season. Alex Leaf also said he made many shots throughout this season. Those are the two best shooters. We also interviewed a few other players to see what they thought about basketball. Many said they started playing basketball before 3rd grade. They also said they are best at passing, shooting, and some said making shots. One of the main things the players and coaches said was that as a team everyone works really well together and that’s what is making them even better. They are still working very hard each day!

Yearbook

All of our clubs, classes, activities, and events are all recorded. Memories, friends, and info, all squeezed into our yearbook. Many students are working hard every morning on our yearbook pages featuring all of our classes, clubs, and before school and after school activities. These hard workers are all creating pages on our clubs, and featuring some pages starring our teachers and some cool things about them. Remember our snow days? If you have any pictures featuring the snow, (especially if kids are in it) send it to Mr. Christison so your picture can be in the yearbook! Don’t forget, if you are an 8th grader and you want your baby picture in the yearbook, contact Mr. Christison. And please remember, our yearbook kids are open to ideas and thoughts, so go ahead and talk to them!

The Bertram Chronicles

The Bertram Chronicles. “What the heck is that?” you might ask. The story: the English\Language Arts GMP teacher, Ms. Shipley, has a son in Australia. He sent her a stuffed sloth for her birthday. The news blog students fell in love with him, and decided that they would create a stop motion video featuring Bertram. We, the news blog students, have producers, directors, costume designers, and set design. Their ideas are featured in weekly episodes starring Bertram doing amazing things like flying, dancing, and thwarting evil death unicorns. We apologize that you can not view the videos at this time, however. We hope to be able to show you soon.

Girls’ Volleyball

The girls volley ball team had a scrimmage last Saturday April 2. Both squads did extremely well. Both teams won 3 out of 4 games. There were also B-squad games on Monday, April fourth and A-squad had games on Tuesday, April 05. These girls practice Monday through Friday from 3:45 to 5:20. They have been working very hard and we appreciate them representing our school.

Ready to Rock With François

Some students would like to introduce a new movie starring a puppet named Francois. It will be called ready to rock with Ms. François. This movie is filled with action and comedy as Ms. Francois begins as a French teacher and trying to accomplish her dreams of being a rock star.  There will also be bloopers of the movie and the cast; Shaylee S, Kyra H, Candice B, Rebecca B, and Destinee P.The crew is very excited to show the movie off and they hope you like it.

FPS

Future Problem Solvers is a club in which team members train to create and solve problems from future scenarios. The scenarios include: recovering from natural disasters, the global workplace, and artificial intelligence. The teams have to come up with 16 problems with the scenario, an underlying problem, 16 solutions that solve the underlying problem, and a ranking process that results in an action plan.

The two teams that Ms. Shipley coaches made it to state this year, the first team in the junior division she’s taken. The teams competed on Saturday, April 2, at Coronado High School. The topic was the Global Workplace, and the teams had to perform a skit based on their action plan.

Both teams competed at state, and both will be moving on to Internationals in early June! Congratulations team! We wish them the best!

Battle of the Books

On Tuesday, May 3rd, the West Middle School Battle of the Books teams went to the annual competition. The competition consisted of four rounds, the first three all combining to reach a total of points. This determines the placing in the fourth round, which determines the final placing of each team. The sixth grade team, despite missing a key competitor, took fourth place in the final round. The eighth grade team took seventh place. Congradualations to both teams. We appreciate them representing our school and hope to see the sixth grade team representing us next year.

 Zootopia

The movie Zootopia is a heart warming story about not giving up and working hard to achieve your goals even if people (or animals) say that you can't. The smallest people can do the biggest things. In the movie, animals - predators and prey - are brought together in a city called Zootopia. They say that this is the place where anything can happen. From the largest elephant to the smallest shrew, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she quickly learns how tough it is to enforce the law. Determined to prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious case. Unfortunately, that means working with Nick Wilde, a wily fox who makes her job even harder. Judy Hopps wants to make the world a better place, and so she dreams of being a police officer.  When Judy finds herself in the heart of Zootopia she is assigned to be a traffic cop. Instead of reaching letting herself feel beat, she exceeds the 100 parking ticket goal and gives out 201 (including herself) tickets before noon. Judy is a high achiever and will work as hard as she needs to achieve her goals. If someone tells her what to, she does it twice as well. Make her give 100 tickets, she givers out 200 parking tickets! The movie Zootopia will be a heartwarming movie with amazing morals for years to come.

Soccer

Have you ever thought about playing soccer? Some people have been interested in soccer since they were young. There are many different positions you can play; goalie, defense, and mid field. There are many exciting things that make soccer a very enjoyable sport. If you are interested, you can talk to Mr. Edens, the coach.
